Why is Dolly Towing Not the Best Fit for Low-Profile Vehicles?

When towing a vehicle from point A to B, there are a variety of options to choose from. You could use a tow bar to haul your RV at the back of your car (literally like a trailer truck). Or use a dolly tow as a cheaper option. However, when it comes to low-profile vehicles such as sports cars or collectible classics, the opposite is true.

High-performance, low-profile vehicles are unique vehicles with special needs, especially for towing a ride. To ensure effortless loading, these vehicles require specialized slide mechanisms that aren't a dolly tow feature. And while tow dollies are widely used, they are not the best fit for low-profile vehicles. Here's why

Damage due to dragging

Dolly towing employs a two-wheel trailer that lifts a vehicle only with its drive wheels off the ground during a tow. While this works fine for most cars, it also means dragging body kit parts of low-profile vehicles. In addition, the bumper or any lower portion is at risk of being damaged due to dragging long distances.

Dangerous hook-up

Despite their wide use, dolly towing involves dangerous hook-up. This is because securing your low-suspension vehicle's front wheels onto the dolly is not an easy task. Unfortunately, even a slight mistake in attaching your car to the dolly can result in horrible situations.

Tire wear

Another disadvantage of towing exotic cars using a dolly is the tire wear; since the front two wheels of your vehicle are lifted onto the dolly, all the weight shifts to the rear end. Thus, putting more stress on the back tires and ultimately causing severe wear and tear along the tow.

For these reasons, most professional towing services in USA do not recommend utilizing dolly towing for expensive low-profile vehicles. To give your car the care it deserves, it is best to utilize flatbed towing when transporting them.
